Inspiration

When I announced I was moving to Salemtowne, friends and neighbors asked why would I want to move into a place full of old people. Well, one reason is for inspiration.

When I walk around the campus, I see lots of people walking, some walking steadily and quickly and some using canes or walkers. But the one thing they all have in common is that they are walking, and walking a lot.

In the neighborhoods I've lived in for the last 20 years, the only people walking daily were the dog walkers. At Salemtowne people are constantly walking the main floor corridor that surrounds the central courtyard (6 laps around equals a mile) or walking around the miles of sidewalks, roads, and trails on the 120-acre campus.

When I see the older walkers, I don't feel sorry for them, I feel inspired to push myself to do more. If they are doing it every day, I have no excuse not to do it. I only hope that I'm able to do as much as they do when I am their age. The same is true when in fitness classes. When a ninety-year-old woman next to you is doing full squats while holding a 10-pound kettlebell, you can't make excuses for not doing your best.

People don’t move to CCRCs to just sit in their homes and fade away. CCRC residents are constantly doing things to challenge their minds and bodies. When walking down a hallway, when someone tells you “Bill just passed” it doesn’t necessarily mean he died; it usually means he just lapped you.
