Door locks

Door locks, especially those in the Driscoll building, have a push button on the inside to use to lock the door when you are inside the apartment. To make it easier to see if the door is locked, use a red permanent marker to color the sides of the button (leave the front of the button its normal color). Now, when the door is unlocked and the button is extended, you will see the red sides of the button. When the door is locked and the button is depressed, you will not see the red.

Washer and dryer filters

This tip concerns the new Whirlpool stacked washer/dryers that are in many of the Salemtowne apartments. People know that you should clean the dryer filter before each use of a dryer (I found that an old tooth brushed works great for this) but many may not have noticed that there's a lint filter inside the washer. It's a vertical unit with vents along its length that's located on the side of the inside of the tub.

To clean the filter, rotate the tub so the filter is on the backside of the washer (this makes it easier to see and reach). Push the tab on the top of the filter, swing the filter outward, and lift it out. Open the filter and clean out the lint.

It's a little tricky to reinstall the filter. Insert the bottom of the filter into the slot, and slide it down into the opening at the bottom of the slot while swinging the filter back into the slot until it snaps into place.
